Mountain View, CA – Groq raises $640M in a major funding round led by Blackrock to advance its high-performance chips for generative AI models, positioning itself to compete with Nvidia. The round also included contributions from Neuberger Berman, Type One Ventures, Cisco, KDDI, and Samsung Catalyst Fund.

This latest funding brings Groq’s total capital raised to over $1 billion, valuing the company at $2.8 billion. Originally aiming for $300 million at a $2.5 billion valuation, Groq has significantly increased its market valuation since April 2021, when it raised $300 million from investors including Tiger Global Management and D1 Capital Partners.

Key Leadership and Advisory Roles

Groq announced the addition of Meta’s chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, as a technical advisor. Furthermore, Stuart Pann, former head of Intel’s foundry business and ex-CIO at HP, will join as chief operating officer. LeCun’s role provides Groq with a strategic edge, despite Meta’s own AI chip initiatives.

Founded in 2016, Groq developed the Language Processing Unit (LPU) inference engine, claiming it can run generative AI models similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and GPT-4o at ten times the speed and one-tenth the energy consumption. Groq’s CEO, Jonathan Ross, co-inventor of Google’s Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), founded the company with Douglas Wightman, an ex-engineer at Alphabet’s X moonshot lab.

Groq’s Growing Ecosystem

Groq offers the LPU-powered developer platform, GroqCloud, supporting open models like Meta’s Llama 3.1, Google’s Gemma, OpenAI’s Whisper, and Mistral’s Mixtral. GroqCloud, now with over 356,000 developers, also provides an API for integrating Groq’s chips in cloud instances. A portion of the new funding will be used to expand GroqCloud’s capacity and introduce new models and features.

Competitive Landscape and Future Plans

With the generative AI market booming, Groq faces competition from established players like Nvidia, which controls a significant share of the AI chip market. Nvidia is enhancing its product lineup with annual AI chip releases and creating bespoke chips for cloud computing and other sectors. Other competitors include Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, all developing custom AI processors.

Groq also contends with several startups in the AI chip market, projected to reach $400 billion in annual sales within the next five years. Rivals like D-Matrix and Etched have recently secured substantial funding for their AI chip innovations. Additionally, OpenAI is reportedly exploring its own AI chip-making venture.

Expanding Enterprise and Government Outreach

To differentiate itself, Groq is heavily investing in enterprise and government outreach. In March, Groq acquired Definitive Intelligence to establish Groq Systems, aiming to serve organizations, including U.S. government agencies, integrating Groq’s chips into data centers. Groq’s partnership with Carahsoft will facilitate public sector sales, and the company has an agreement with Earth Wind & Power to install its LPUs in a Norway data center.

Global Partnerships and Future Manufacturing

Groq is also collaborating with Aramco Digital to deploy LPUs in future Middle East data centers. Additionally, the company is advancing towards the next generation of its chips, contracting with Samsung’s foundry business to manufacture 4nm LPUs, which are expected to offer significant performance and efficiency improvements over the current 13nm chips.

Groq plans to deploy over 108,000 LPUs by the end of Q1 2025, reinforcing its commitment to advancing AI chip technology.
